Rules for Write Club

First rule of WRITE CLUB: tell everyone about WRITE CLUB.

We want to build a strong community of writers and that means spreading the word.

Second rule: During a person’s first session, they are expected to write.

This rule sets the expectation that we are writing in a social environment not socializing in a writing environment.

Third rule: There is no fee.

WRITE CLUB runs on donated time and money. We do what we do because we love words. The only time there may be fees is when the group rents a space for the purpose of organised events or marathons outside of regular Write Club meets.

Fourth rule: WRITE CLUB is NOT a critique group.

If members want to exchange writing outside of the group or among themselves, that’s definitely encouraged, but Write Club meets, at large, should remain a place for the active production of writing, not the critiquing of work. Write Club is not intended to replace a solid critique group, as that too is important to a writer’s craft, but even still it has proved a useful venue for writers to network with other writers who may serve as suitable critique partners or beta readers on an individual basis. When this happens, it is a good sign that our community efforts are working. Rejoice!

Fifth rule: WRITE CLUB is NOT invitation only.

Everyone who wants to come out to an event is welcome.

Sixth rule: WRITE CLUB is all genres welcome - no exclusions.

We are all here to write. At the end of the day, it is that members wrote, not what they wrote, that counts.

Seventh rule: WRITE CLUB is all skill levels welcome.

Eighth rule: Celebrate Successes!

Productivity includes editing.

Ninth rule: WRITE CLUB is NOT a place to actively solicit services.

Tenth rule: All of the above rules are designed to unify the Write Club experience so that no matter which event one attends or where the event takes place, the attendee is greeted with a positive community of writers who gather for the sake of productivity. We are a burgeoning community, and as such, it would be a great disservice to our ideals if we adhered to these rules and forgot that communities grow and, as they grow, sometimes things need to change to reflect that. Therefore, the Tenth Rule is one of self-awareness.
